With countless websites online, and growing, unless you have a very unique name the chances are that the domain you want most is already taken. While finding the domain of your dreams in use can be devastating, it is by no means the end. Domain names are not written in stone, nor can they be copyrighted. Thus, if there is only one domain name you’ll settle for then you can get it, but it just might cost you, a lot.
The first step is to see if your domain name is available. That can be easily done by visiting any site that registers domain names or hosts websites.
If you find that the domain name you want is already taken, then check out the site that is using it. There is a possibility that someone owns the name, but doesn’t even have a site. If that’s the case, your chances of acquiring the name should be substantially easier. However, if you find the domain name is being used by someone like a large corporation, you’re probably better off just coming up with a Plan B.
For those that find a domain name without a website or one that is very crude and doesn’t appear to have been updated recently, make attempts to contact the owner. Ideally, you should be able to come to some type of agreement for transferring the domain name over to you. A likely scenario is that the owner will offer it for a price. Here, it’s best to point out their misuse of the name while bluffing your desire for ownership in hopes of getting a fair deal.
If you choose not to negotiate or the current owner is aksing too much, another option is to play the waiting game. Domain name ownership can expire. You just have to find out when that time is and be ready to take it at a moment’s notice. It’s possible that the name will be put up for auction.
Any domain name is available, it just depends on how much you want it.
